PROCESS CONTROL AND INSTRUMENTATION
HANDS-ON SKILLS

WHAT IS PROCESS CONTROL?

Amatrol’s Process Control and Instrumentation training program combines comprehensive training courses with hands-on skills gained through experience with world-class simulators featuring industry-standard components. This unrivaled pairing of theoretical depth and breadth with hands-on skills prepares learners for careers in all fields that rely upon process control and instrumentation.

Don’t just take our word for it, though. Amatrol’s Process Control and Instrumentation program is a proven means of addressing the critical skills gap facing many industries by providing schools the tools they need to equip their students with the process control and instrumentation skills industries desperately need. For example, Frank Phillips College in Texas has used Amatrol’s curriculum and equipment to train hundreds of students in the process technologies the refineries and related businesses in their local area require.

Process control is a versatile and vital part of major industries, including: power generation; petrochemicals; food processing and bottling; chemical manufacturing; biotechnology; pharmaceuticals; and refineries.

Because of the wide application of this key component, Amatrol has developed the largest and most in-depth offering of industrial process control training options available. Amatrol offers four major process control systems, each covering a different process control application: level and flow, temperature, analytical/chemical, and pressure. Amatrol also offers a variety of training options for related process control applications such as HART communication protocol, Foundation Fieldbus, and SCADA.

Process Control System

LEVEL/FLOW PROCESS CONTROL AND TROUBLESHOOTING

Level/Flow Process Control Learning System (T5552): teaches two of the most common types of process control systems, flow and liquid level, and the basic concepts on which other systems are based. This process control system allows learners to calibrate, adjust, install, operate, and connect process control systems in industrial applications. This system requires the PID Controller Module (T5552-C1-A).

Level/Flow System Expansions

Smart Flow Transmitter Learning System (T5552-F1): provides a 4-20 mA feedback signal that is proportional to the flow rate measured by transducers that sense differential pressure. This system offers expansions like: pitot tube flow transducerVenturi flow transducer, and orifice plate flow transducer.

Ultrasonic Liquid Level Learning System (T5552-L1): provides a 4-20 mA feedback signal that is proportional to liquid level. This course covers major topics like ultrasonic level measurements, ultrasonic level calibration, and level controls.

Foundation Fieldbus Process Control 1 Learning System (T5552-FF1): covers a popular industrial method for calibrating and troubleshooting valves and transmitters connected to a network. Foundation Fieldbus is an all-digital, multi-drop communication system used for basic and advanced flow control, temperature control, and tank level control.

HART Process Control 1 Learning System (T5552-H1): teaches one of the most commonly used communication protocols, HART (Highway Addressable Remote Transducer). This course allows for the practice of valuable hands-on skills such as configuring and installing a HART interface, using a HART field device to verify the integrity of a process control loop, and calibrating a differential pressure flow transmitter using HART software.

Visualization Process Control 1 Learning System (T5552-S1): covers SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) that allows operators, technicians, and engineers to monitor and control process applications using sensors networked to equipment on the plant floor. These remote sensor readings are collected and displayed graphically in an organized way allowing process control decisions to be made.

Temperature Process Control

Temperature Process Control Learning System (T5553): allows learners to study and practice calibrating, adjusting, installing, operating, and tuning thermal process control systems in industrial applications. Major topic areas include: basic temperature control elements; loop controllers; final control elements; temperature sensors; temperature transmitters; basic temperature control; methods of automatic control; and control loop performance. This system requires either the PID Controller Module – Single Loop (T5553-C1-A) or the PID Controller Module – Dual Loop (T5553-C2-A).

The Temperature Process Control Learning System also features two options for expansion: the Three-Channel Data Acquisition Learning System (T5553-R1A) and the Two-Channel Temperature Transmitter Module (T5553-T1).

Analytical Process Control

Analytical Process Control Learning System (T5554): covers major topics and skills involved with controlling and modifying the chemical properties of a substance. The Analytical Process Control Learning System covers topics like pH electrodes, pH meters and transmitters, and loop controllers and vital theoretical process control knowledge including: describing the function of a process hazard analysis; defining pH and explaining its importance; learning five common types of loop controller parameter groups; and configuring a Honeywell UDC 3500 for continuous pH control. This learning system requires either the PID Controller Module – Single Loop (T5554-C1-A) or the PID Controller Module – Dual Loop (T5554-C2-A).

This system features a variety of expansions and add-ons including Advanced PH Control Module (T5554A1)Advanced Analytical Control Module (T5554-A2)Classic Glass Probe Module (T5554-A3), and the Three-Channel Data Acquisition Learning System (T5554-R1A).

Pressure Process Control

Pressure Process Control Learning System (T5555): offers the ability to control liquid level and tank pressure simultaneously using a human machine interface (HMI), programmable automation controller (PAC), and variable frequency drive (VFD). This functionality allows learners to study important industrial gas blanket applications as well as gain valuable hands-on experience in practicing a broad range of pressure process operations in both manual and automatic modes. The Pressure Process Control Learning System explores major topics like loop control devices, HMI panel operation, pressure control systems, process system alarms, automatic control methods, performance concepts, control loop performance, and open- and closed-loop tuning.

Portable Process Control Training

Amatrol’s Portable Process Control Learning System – Level and Flow (990-PC1) covers two of the most common types of process control systems, flow and liquid level, by providing eLearning curriculum and hands-on training for subjects like process control equipment safety, loop controllers, level measurement and control, control loop performance, and more! For those who also want to teach valuable troubleshooting skills, Amatrol offers the Portable Process Control Troubleshooting Learning System – Level & Flow (990-PC1F).

These portable process control training systems are convenient when space is an issue or learning needs to take place in more than one location. They each feature two portable consoles that include a PID controller, operator controls, process meter, flow transmitter, water tanks, gauges, and more! Amatrol uses industry-standard components that allow learners to practice real-world skills using equipment that they’ll see in advanced manufacturing environments.

Run a Process Control Line with a PLC Learning System

Amatrol offers a variety of ways to expand your process control training options, including the ability to control an entire process control line or individual process control system with a programmable logic controller (PLC).

Amatrol’s Process Control Connection Kit (33278) includes unions, piping, and cables necessary to connect two or more process control systems that will be controlled by an Allen-Bradley or Siemens PLC on the Programmable Controller Troubleshooting Learning System (890-PECB). If you would like to connect all four of Amatrol’s process control systems, three of these kits are required.

For individual system control by the Programmable Controller Troubleshooting system using an Allen-Bradley ControlLogix PLC (890-AB5500), Amatrol offers the ControlLogix Process Control Learning System (89-PC-AB5500).

Additionally, Amatrol offers the ability to control the T5552 system with each of our portable PLC learning options.
