What are Specialty Micrometers?

The standard micrometer is probably one of the first measuring instruments a production technician will encounter in manufacturing. It can measure a wide range of features, from outside diameters to lengths. However, the standard micrometer cannot measure all features, such as the diameter of a thin groove on a shaft, or the wall thickness of a ring. These situations require special micrometers.

Specialty micrometers are deigned to fulfill unique measurement requirements. These requirements include measuring special shapes, such as threads or gears, or dimensions in limited areas, like groove diameter or the wall thickness of pipe or tubing. Even though there are usually noticeable differences between specialty micrometers and standard micrometers, there are many similarities, starting with the components.
