What is a Gauge Block? What are They Used For?

Gauge blocks are a set of precision ground and lapped blocks of different lengths that can be stacked to form precise lengths for highly-accurate linear measurements. They were invented by Carl Johansson, a Swedish weapons inspector, who needed a better way to measure rifle parts. In honor of Johansson and his work with the blocks, the components are sometime referred to as “Jo blocks.”

Gauge blocks are used to set a variety of measuring instruments. Gauge blocks set precise angles for sine blocks and are used to set snap gauges. Gauge blocks can be stacked and assembled into precision height gauges for layout. They can also be used as auxiliary measuring systems for machines and tooling.
