Advanced manufacturing in Puerto Rico received a major boost in April with the opening of a brand-new LIFT Learning Lab in Caguas. The LIFT Learning Lab offers schools, instructors, students, and individuals access to next-level training using Amatrol’s IGNITE: Mastering Manufacturing program.
Amatrol developed the groundbreaking IGNITE: Mastering Manufacturing program in conjunction with LIFT, with significant contributions from America Makes, MxD – The Digital Manufacturing Institute, The Ohio State University, ASM Materials Education Foundation, and The PAST Foundation.
IGNITE is a foundational skill development program designed to stimulate interest in today’s Advanced Manufacturing/Industry 4.0 careers. IGNITE provides career exploration opportunities and equips learners with the in-depth knowledge and hands-on skills they need to be successful in the highly-skilled, high-pay jobs available in advanced manufacturing.
In addition to hands-on technical skills in a wide variety of disciplines found throughout manufacturing, the IGNITE program also teaches the valuable, uniquely-human “soft skills,” such as communication, teamwork, and critical thinking, that are critical to future career success.
Importantly, IGNITE also prepares students to earn industry-standard certifications that can jump-start their advanced manufacturing careers. For example, IGNITE students can choose to pursue certifications like the MSSC Certified Production Technician Plus Skill Boss certification or advanced Industry 4.0 certifications from SACA.
IGNITE and the LIFT Learning Lab will provide invaluable resources to the people of Puerto Rico as they improve workforce development to support a growing advanced manufacturing sector.
According to a LIFT press release, “Puerto Rico’s manufacturing sector drives nearly half of the island’s gross domestic product and spans industries from biotech and medical devices to aerospace and electronics. The new Learning Lab is strategically positioned to strengthen this vital pillar of the economy.”
Carlos Ríos Pierluisi, Deputy Secretary of Puerto Rico’s Department of Economic Development and Commerce, expressed gratitude “that LIFT is…opening this strategic Lab that will greatly benefit our economic development efforts, based in strengthening innovation and updating the technological skills of our workforce continuously, to keep attracting advanced manufacturing to the Island.”
Caguas Mayor William Miranda Torres noted that the opening of the LIFT Learning Lab marks “a pivotal moment for education and workforce development on the island” as it becomes “a hub for technological innovation, workforce development, and industry collaboration throughout the region.”
