Principles of Factory Automation Training | Ladder Logic and Control Logic

Principles of Factory Automation Multimedia Courseware: MXAU202

Amatrol’s Principles of Factory Automation eLearning Course (MXAU202) covers the fundamental principles of automation for industrial applications, such as control logic, ladder logic, limit switches, and electromechanical relay. Within this interactive eLearning course, learners will study: the elements of control logic, reading and interpreting basic ladder diagrams, electromechanical relay operation, limit switch operation in an event sequencing circuit, and more!

Learning Topics

  • Relay Logic Control Circuits
  • Basic Ladder Diagram Components and Symbols
  • Solenoid-Operated Output Device Function
  • Electromechanical Relay Function
  • Limit Switch Function
  • Event Sequencing Circuit
  • Single-Cycle Cylinder Reciprocation Relay Circuit
  • Continuous-Cycle Reciprocation Circuit
  • Safety Interlock Circuit Operation

How Do Relay Logic Control Circuits Work?

All automated machines use some type of controller, which acts as the brain for the machine. Controllers generally control the sequence of steps that a machine performs by switching outputs on and off. One of the earliest types of automated controllers is a relay logic control, which consists of multiple control relays wired together in a circuit to control the sequence of a machine. A control relay is an electrically-operated switch.

A relay control system also includes input and output devices. Output devices are wired to the relay circuit and turned on in a sequence to create the steps of operation. Manual input devices, such as pushbutton switches, are wired into the relay circuit to allow the operator to start and stop the machine sequence. Automatic switches, such as limit switches, are mounted on the machine to sense movement. They are wired into the relay circuit to trigger the sequence of steps.
